about

Cincinnati’s Sleepy Drums will be releasing their long anticipated new album, The Future of Rad Times, on May 13. The event will be celebrated at the Southgate House Revival in Newport, KY with support from A.M Nice and National Barks.

The album has been a long time in the making.

“Normally we release music rather impulsively so to spend as much time as we have on this recording is unique,” principal songwriter of the band, J. Stout comments.

The music of the album cements the bands unique sound with a clarity that hasn’t been achieved previously. The songs expertly blend together many shades of alternative rock- from indie, to grunge, punk and psychedelia.

The recording of The Future of Rad times began in 2018 at Fuzzy Eyed Studios in Cincinnati, run by local music veteran Todd Uttley. The band returned to the studio periodically to record more songs as they were completed. Everything was going smoothly until the first lockdown of the pandemic.

“When the quarantine started I basically stopped meeting in person with any of my collaborators and music creation shifted into the digital realm- sending tracks back and forth, building songs that way,” Stout explains.

Determined to complete the album, Stout completed the final vocal, guitar and keyboard overdubs in his own home studio which he sent to Todd to mix with the content recorded at Fuzzy Eye. The results were very rewarding.

“This is hands down our finest recording and the best document of our songs and sound,” Stout says.

Though the title may suggest otherwise, Stout insists that the Future of Rad Times is not necessarily a party album.

“These songs were completed during the thick of the pandemic and a lot of the lyrics reflect the alienation, loneliness and frustration that many of us felt at the time,” Stout explains. “So the title is less of a projection as it is a toast- here’s to the future of rad times! It’s been a rough few years, but we made it through. Though it can be difficult to be positive at times, let’s hope for rad times when we can”

The Future of Rad Times will be released and streaming everywhere via Lo Fi City on May 13th. A limited edition cassette will be available at the release show and at loficity.Bandcamp.com.
